Power Surge Play Rule to be Introduced in PSL 2025
To enhance the excitement and competitiveness of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), a significant rule change is being introduced for the upcoming 10th edition of the tournament. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that PSL 10 will feature a new rule known as the “Power Surge Play.”

This innovative adjustment will alter the traditional power play format seen in previous PSL seasons. Rather than the usual six-over power play at the start of the innings, teams will now have two distinct power play periods. The first power play will last for four overs, while the remaining two overs can be utilized strategically later in the innings.
The “Power Surge Play” rule, adapted from Australia’s Big Bash League, adds flexibility to the batting side. The remaining two overs of the power play can be taken during any stage of the innings, allowing teams to opt for the extra fielding restrictions in crucial moments, such as the final overs. As with the conventional power play, only two fielders will be allowed outside the inner circle during these surgeovers.
Cricket experts believe this rule could benefit teams chasing a large total, as it offers the opportunity to save their power playovers for when they need to accelerate the run rate. “It brings a new layer of strategy to the game,” said one PSL analyst, highlighting that the new rule could create dramatic shifts in the game’s momentum.
While some fans and players are excited by the introduction of the “Power Surge Play,” others have expressed reservations about the change. Critics argue that it could disrupt the flow of the game and may not be a necessary addition.
As PSL 10 approaches, fans are eager to see how this new rule will impact the tournament. Will it lead to more thrilling finishes, or will it slow down the natural rhythm of the game? Only time will tell.
