PSL 10 Draft Scheduled to Follow IPL Auction
In a major update for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that the draft for PSL 10 will take place immediately after the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction concludes. The PSL draft, originally expected earlier in the year, has been pushed to April due to the tournament postponement caused by the Champions Trophy.

With the IPL auction scheduled for November, PSL franchises will now have the opportunity to select unsold players from the IPL pool, offering a unique twist to this season’s draft process. According to the PCB, the decision to hold the PSL draft post-IPL auction is strategic, aimed at giving PSL franchises a chance to sign players who may not secure IPL contracts.

However, there are significant financial considerations involved. Some PSL franchises have voiced concerns about the direct player signing option, which was initially proposed by the PCB. This option would allow teams to directly sign marquee players before the draft, but many franchises have rejected the idea, citing the high costs associated with such signings. The traditional drafting method remains a more budget-friendly option, as it minimizes financial strain on teams.
The PCB’s approach is clear: while the IPL continues to offer more lucrative contracts, with top players earning between 8 to 15 crore rupees, the PSL, which typically offers around 4 crore rupees, will likely have to target players who go unsold at the IPL auction. This could mean PSL franchises will have a smaller pool of top-tier players to choose from, as high-profile players like David Warner are expected to be snapped up by IPL teams.

Still, there is optimism. Some franchises are hopeful that PSL 10 could benefit from experienced players, possibly those nearing the twilight of their careers, who don’t secure IPL contracts. Though these may not be the top performers currently dominating international cricket, the presence of seasoned players could add value to the tournament.
Looking ahead, the PCB has even bigger plans for PSL 11. In a major development, the board plans to expand the league by adding two new teams and introducing an auction system similar to that of the IPL. This shift could make the PSL even more competitive and financially robust in the coming years. However, for PSL 10, the focus remains on successfully navigating the upcoming season, which will now share a window with the IPL in April.
The simultaneous scheduling of the IPL and PSL presents an interesting dynamic. While the IPL may draw top talent, the PSL still has a chance to attract players looking for opportunities after the IPL auction.
As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on how the unsold IPL players might shape the PSL rosters, and what this could mean for the future of the league.
