PSL 10 draft: Which players will be picked in first round?

The PSL draft 2025 is set to take place today, and I will share details about which teams might pick which players in the top categories. This is more of an analysis than actual news, depending on the team’s requirements and the available options. Naturally, every team will aim to select the best available players. Let’s analyze what each team needs.

Lahore Qalandars

Since the Platinum, Diamond, and Gold categories have their player slots pre-determined, we will examine them accordingly. Starting with Lahore Qalandars, they have the first pick in the Platinum category. Reports suggest they are likely to pick David Warner. However, I believe they should consider picking a middle-order batsman instead, as there is a significant gap between them. For instance, Rassie van der Dussen, their top scorer in the last edition, should have been retained. If they pick Warner, they will lose out on other top-rated players because they have already retained Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman in the Platinum category, leaving only one available pick.

Looking at their Diamond category, they have retained Haris Rauf and Sikandar Raza, allowing them one more pick, either local or international. Since their Platinum picks already include local players (Fakhar Zaman and Shaheen Afridi), they will likely opt for an international player in this category. Their bowling lineup is strong, with Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Zaman Khan, but their middle order remains a concern. Players like Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Nabi, or Daryl Mitchell could fill this gap. In their Gold category, Abdullah Shafique, Zaman Khan, and Jahandad Khan have been retained, while further picks can be made in the Silver category.

Islamabad United

Moving on to Islamabad United, they have retained two local players, Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah, in the Platinum category. This means they must pick an international player in this category. In the Diamond category, they have retained Imad Wasim and Azam Khan. They need a top-order batsman to complement Colin Munro and a pacer to support Naseem Shah, as Rumman Raees is not as dependable. Since they don’t require spinners, their focus might shift to an international batter like Jason Roy, Finn Allen, or Alex Hales, with the latter already being a familiar name for them. Depending on their Platinum pick, they might adjust their strategy in the Diamond category.

Karachi Kings

Karachi Kings need reinforcements in their middle order, along with an all-rounder and a pacer. They have retained Shan Masood, James Vince, and one more top-order player. This means they are well-covered in the top three batting positions but need a middle-order batsman and a bowler to support Hasan Ali. With three empty slots in the Platinum category, they have significant flexibility. They can pick two international players and one local. Possible picks include Rassie van der Dussen, Daryl Mitchell, or Kusal Mendis. In the Diamond category, they have options like Abbas Afridi, Junaid Khan, or Tim Southee. Karachi Kings could strengthen their squad this year after underwhelming performances in recent seasons.

In conclusion, today’s draft is crucial for teams to balance their squads based on their needs. Let’s see how the teams strategize and execute their picks to assemble competitive squads for the upcoming PSL season.
