PSL could clash with IPL this Year – PSL Schedule 2025

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) usually takes place in March. However, in 2025, Pakistan is set to host the Champions Trophy, which will feature eight teams. This raises the question of when the PSL will be scheduled. Today, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) held a significant meeting with all stakeholders, including the franchise owners. A high-level meeting took place, and it was decided that the PSL could be held in between the Champions Trophy dates.

There are a few special things to note for the upcoming PSL edition. Firstly, the next PSL edition has been announced to be held between April 7 and May 20. This is a notable change because, previously, the PSL was held in March. Due to the Champions Trophy, the schedule has been adjusted. The venues selected for this edition are Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.

One special change is that the playoffs, particularly the knockout stage, will be held at a neutral venue. Discussions on the specific neutral venue are still ongoing, and another meeting will be held to finalize this. The main focus of today’s meeting was to decide the timing of the PSL, considering the Champions Trophy and the IPL.

The PCB faces a challenge regarding which foreign players will participate in the PSL, especially since the IPL will be happening simultaneously. In the previous edition, the PCB reported a high attendance and significant media rights sales, although the absence of big-name foreign players was a concern.

A proposed change is to introduce an “Impact Player” rule similar to the IPL. This rule allows a team to call up an additional player if they face an early collapse, making the game less one-sided. Last year’s PSL saw ten matches decided on the final ball, showcasing highly competitive cricket.

However, the biggest challenge for the PCB will be attracting foreign players during the IPL. Top players may choose the IPL over the PSL, though neglected players from the IPL auction might join the PSL. The scheduling of other leagues like ILT20 and the Bangladesh Premier League, which conclude before the PSL, also affects player availability.

Despite these challenges, the PCB has no option but to proceed with the PSL schedule as planned, ensuring it fits around the Champions Trophy. Final details will be confirmed later.
